Children Have a Better Chance!

February 28, 2019 Hyun Bang, DDS

Our Children Should Not Suffer

Children with these symptoms must be treated urgently to prevent a life-time of damage. Children treated from a young age can grow and develop on their own with a tongue/breathing trainer mouth guard that they wear to sleep combined with myofunctional therapy. This friendly way of helping our little friends grow on their own to become independent has been life-changing.

Mouth Breathing & Empathy

Some children have a much more severe case of malocclusion. This manifests in psychological problems that get diagnosed as mental disorders or learning disabilities, and kids are put on meds or treated differently by society. But the cause of these issues may be elsewhere. It may not be the neurotransmitters that are off balance that need drugs to mitigate for. Often these children suffer from mouth-breathing, grinding, snoring. The sheer lack of healthy sleep is what causes them to behave in a way that gets mistaken as a mental disorder. We call this sleep-disordered breathing.

The child’s nose is a crucial part of the Limbic System development. Nasal Breathing becomes a stimulus for the part of the brain involved in our behavioral and emotional responses - the Amygdala - a central part of this system, responsible for empathy. But if the nose is obstructed due to narrow anatomy, which causes rhinitis and allergic flareups, the child will begin to grind, snore, and mouth breath. Now the development of that part of the brain diminishes.

Study shows children who tend to harm animals has diminished amygdala function and activity. Mouth breathing therefore inhibits one’s ability to empathize.

To prevent medicating our children and having them go through difficult treatments one after another knowledge is key. Knowing the root cause will allow more parents to get help for their children, and allow them to experience natural growth and development, and prevent many of the above ailments.
